Day 4- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or “I’m Fabulous!”)

My curly hair. Even if you don't think it looks
good just pretend that you do.
As I tell you about the Christmas miracles of the past two days, I feel free as a bird! I will get to why in my next post. First, let me ask you a question: Do you believe in karma; that what goes around comes around? Well, I didn’t think I did until this week. On Tuesday morning I woke up and was running late. Normally in the mornings I wash, dry, and straighten my hair—a task that takes at least half an hour. On Tuesday I didn’t have time to do this, so I just woke up, put some “product” in my hair, and went to school. My hair is naturally wavy/curly, and the night before I had washed it and let it air dry, so I went to school with curly hair, which I hardly ever do. Further, my hair is now short because I just got it cut last week, so the curl is a lot more noticeable than it has ever been before. Well, what do you know? Everyone loved my hair!

And I am really not exaggerating when I say everyone. I got more compliments on my hair on Tuesday than I have ever gotten on anything in my life. I didn’t even get as many compliments as I got on Tuesday on the day I got married! Empowered by the fact that I might not ever have to fix my hair in the morning again, I simply didn’t wash my hair on Tuesday night, slept on it, put some more “product” in it on Wednesday morning, and went back to work. I got a whole bunch of compliments on Wednesday too! It was like some alien person had replaced me—an alien person with magnificent hair! Emboldened by my second day of compliments, I washed my hair on Wednesday night, let it air dry, got up Thursday morning, and repeated my hair routine, which is to say I barely did anything to it. I got a few more compliments at work, and last night, when I went to Jason’s Deli, I got a compliment there too!

My family has a Thursday night tradition of meeting at Jason’s Deli to eat dinner together. We have been following this tradition for at least the last two years (Clearly we are not very exciting). Because we go there every week, we know some of the people who work there, including this man who works behind the counter making sandwiches. He is older than I am, and has a big, gold front tooth. Also, my mom has gotten into conversations with him several times, and has found out that he has 12 children by several different women. Of course, this man has a thing for me, and has asked my brother a couple of times if I am dating anyone, a question to which the answer is always “yes,” even though I currently do not date. The man talks to me sometimes, and gives me extra food from time to time.

Well, last night I walked into Jason’s Deli and went to the drink machine to start getting everyone’s drinks, and the man ran out from behind the counter and over to me.

“What did you do different!?” he asked excitedly.

“Uh, I let my hair be curly,” I said. “I have naturally curly hair.”

“You look awesome!” exclaimed the man. “Your look is awesome!”

I thanked him, somewhat embarrassed by the attention, but also somewhat buoyed up by the fact that my hair was fabulous enough to warrant a man running out from behind a counter in the middle of making a sandwich. At that moment I decided that maybe things in life are fairer than I thought. Maybe what goes around does come around, and maybe we do get something in return if we try to treat others well, AND maybe if we have endured a lot of crap, we one day get something wonderful in return. It was truly miraculous as I realized that, although I was in a crappy marriage, have historically picked terrible men, and that I currently have 50 pounds to lose, I HAVE FABULOUS HAIR! Plus, I don’t have to do ANYTHING to it except wash it. I feel like I am finally getting my reward for enduring skeevy guys and gaining a buttload of weight, plus the torture of not being able to have chocolate whenever I want. Because, although things may have sucked for me sometimes (like they have for everybody) not having to fix my hair in the morning kind of makes up for some of that. And, during this season of giving, I feel like I have been given a lot. Happy Holidays!
