Days 12 & 13- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or "It's Personal!")

Walks make Betty extremely happy!
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...Okay, I don't exactly have a true love, and, based on my past history, if I did he would probably not give me things like partridges or calling birds, but rather the burden of  the $10,000 debt he accumulated in Vegas that weekend I thought he was at an educational conference. All kidding aside, yesterday I received a truly special Christmas luxury: the miracle of a personal day from work. Now, I took the day off because I had several personal matters to which I needed to attend. While I tried to take care of these things as best as I could, the afternoon culminated in a two-hour nap, as any successful afternoon should. So, while I wasn't exactly productive on my personal day, I certainly am well-rested now!

On the thirteenth day of Christmas, I have somehow miraculously managed to exercise. In fact,  it happened so fast I almost didn't even realize I did it, but I have decided that it still counts. I got up around 6:30 today and got the bright idea that I would take my dog, Betty, out for an early-morning walk. Proud of my motivation, I got dressed and put on a sweat jacket. Soon Betty and I were out and about in the cold. I was enjoying the sounds of nature in the early morning, with the noise of a big truck thrown in now and again for good measure, when what did I hear but the pitter patter of raindrops on the asphalt? The sound was at first as fleeting as the noise made by reindeer hooves on the roof, but it soon became more insistent.

Committed to finishing the walk, I led my dog further up the street. Soon, the ethereal drumming of magical sugarspun Christmas raindrops had turned into the pounding pulse of a downpour worthy of monsoon season. I turned Betty around and began walking toward home but, because I hate getting wet, my walk soon turned into a run and, more rapid than eagles, my dog and I zoomed over hills and through puddle-ridden streets on our way home. It was also quite miraculous that I didn't become so winded that I dropped dead right down the street from my house. Somehow, we arrived back at the house, whereupon I dried Betty with a super-absorbent  towel and peeled off my wet sweat jacket to find that I was mostly dry underneath.

While I typically have a motivation problem when I try to exercise, I think the fact that my run was a surprise to me really helped obliterate the whole motivation issue. In fact, I am thinking of paying a man in a Planet of the Apes style gorilla suit with an air horn to approach me at random times during the day and chase me for distances of 1,000 feet. I feel like such shorter, faster sprints would really amp up my cardio, and would also be great for my calves. Then I wouldn't have to make a New Year's resolution to get in shape because, thanks to crazy monkey man I'd already be halfway there!

Days 10 & 11- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or “I Wear the Pants!”)

I wear the pants-the sparkly, gold pants!
The miracle of the tenth day of Christmas was a simple, yet powerful testament to the effect comfort can have on the human condition: we were allowed a jeans day at work! I can be having the worst, crappiest day, but something about not having to wear dress pants will lift that day up to being 15 times better than it would have been if artificial fibers had been involved. Now, this is not to say that my jeans are exactly super comfortable. I got my jeans a few months ago, and they are a little snug because I have gained a couple of pounds since I bought them, but still, they are jeans. When I wear jeans I feel a little more like myself than I do on a typical day at work. After all, I would never choose to wear my dress pants if I was not going to work!

Today’s miracle, the miracle for the eleventh day of Christmas is probably more profound than getting to wear jeans to work. Since I got divorced I have been honing my people radar, and improving my ability to judge if someone has good intentions or ill intentions, and if someone is going to follow through with what they say they are going to do. I have been very guilty of having a poor radar in the past, particularly when it comes to men. I would meet a guy, and because he was nice, or funny, or cute (particularly if he was cute), I would overlook his lackluster qualities or explain them away in some way that now sounds moronic to me. Here is an example:

Phone: Ring, ring!

Audrey: Hello?

Random Guy: Hi, Audrey? This is Random Guy. You know, the guy who said he’d call when we went out last week, but who has totally ignored you since?

Audrey: Oh, hi Random Guy, how are you doing today?

Random Guy: I’m great, Audrey! I’m sorry I haven’t called this week. My cell phone battery died and I just couldn’t find a charger until today.

Audrey: Huh. That’s weird. Then how did you call my friend Bubba yesterday?

Random Guy: Oh, that. Well, I had a charger, but it only works for calling guys. I couldn’t find my girl phone charger until this morning.

Audrey: Hmmmm. Sounds plausible. Let me now make things very easy for you so that you don’t have to explain yourself or do any work in this relationship.

As you can see, I was not always a genius when it came to men and their excuses. However, particularly in the past few months, I have come a long way in this respect. Miraculously, I have realized that if someone really wants to do something like call you, or see you, and if you are important enough to them for them to want to do these things, then they will make them happen, and there will not be excuses. If they don’t call or text, or don’t make time to help you when you have a problem, or see you sometimes, then it is because it is just not important to them to do so. This knowledge has been very sobering, yet very freeing. Now, if anyone, guy or girl, does not follow through or make time for our friendship, then I don’t try to make excuses for them, or explain away their actions. Barring some catastrophic event having occurred in their lives, I assume that it is just not important to them. Then I can see things as they really are, rather than how I want them to be, which keeps me from getting involved in any situations in which I will just end up hurt and/or disappointed.

While this may not seem like such a big deal, it is a truly great leap in my development as a person. (If you had seen how much I sucked at this before, you would be very proud of me now!) It is possible to be friends with someone who is not reliable, but you have to expect the call where they cancel, or not hearing from them for extended periods of time, and you just cannot let it bother you. The best part is that this knowledge keeps me from dating men who are not able to get it together and who have no follow through. So, as the title of this post indicates, I have gone from being someone who is just whipped around wherever the wind takes me in my dealings with other human beings, to someone who is in the driver’s seat as far as my relationships go: I wear the pants!

Days 8 & 9- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or “ Running in Heels”)

Behold! My glorious shoes! I can wear them like a champ!
Monday was a day that started in a rather blah manner. I was still recovering from my holiday stomach bug, which has caused me to not be very hungry, and to feel very full as soon as I’ve eaten. However, I have been able to do something miraculous with my recovery: I am using my stomach virus recovery as a way to “reset” my stomach and trick it into knowing when it’s full, which means, basically teaching it to be someone else’s stomach. You know, kind of like when you have to restart your computer because something all virusy is happening, and when you turn it off and turn it back on everything is okay?

Well, since my virus, I can’t eat past when I am full because my stomach hurts, and, while In don’t want my stomach to hurt every time I eat, I am hoping that it can learn that it is okay to stop eating because there will be food again. I mean, seriously, you would think I was raised with 15 siblings where I had to fight for every morsel of food I ever got, the way I can shovel it in. Things are going well, though, because yesterday I was able to only eat what I wanted at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and also, I only had two fun size candy bars in between! It was a truly wondrous thing to behold!

Today, I am experiencing a miracle of fashion! I am wearing the most awesome shoes I have purchased in the recent past, and they have pretty tall wedge heels, and I am walking in them like a pro! I am all sashaying around like I own the place and everything, rather than tottering about like a four-year-old in dress-up heels, or like a centenarian with a cane or something. It is very empowering to be able to walk around in heels without fear of death or mortal injury. It sure has upped my confidence level!

Plus, if this skill proves to generalize to other types of heeled shoes, then a whole new avenue of fashion choices is opening up for me! For some reason I am not getting blisters today, which is a miracle in and of itself, but ask me again at the end of the day if you want to know for sure. I might even be able to wear a pair of heels that aren’t wedges or platforms sometime! I also like that when I wear heels, it makes me almost six feet tall, because I particularly enjoy being as tall as or taller than many of the men I encounter on a daily basis. If I ever decide to date again, I will either need to find a tall man or one that doesn’t mind wearing lifts in his shoes, but I guess a man who is the same height as me when I wear heels would be okay, if he’s not weird about it or anything, because I am going to continue to wear heels from now until the end of time. Plus, since I may not ever date again, it shouldn’t be a problem anyway. Onward and upward!

Days 6 & 7- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or "Whoa Momma!")

My Mom. When she saw this picture she said,
"That looks like a picture of a fat woman laughing."
But I think she looks beautiful!
I have decided to only post once for the weekend, so you will be seeing two days condensed into one post that will probably make it online somewhere north of 8 PM on Sunday evening, seeing that I excel at procrastination. Saturday's Christmas miracle came in the form of a Christmas gift-the gift of my annual holiday season stomach virus. This year is actually the third year in a row I have contracted a stomach virus during the month of December. Last year's arrived on Christmas night around 11 PM, and left me so ill that I still didn't feel like eating two days later. If you know me, then you know that hardly has one day, much less two days, ever passed when I didn't think about food!

I won't go into the details of all the festive fun, lest to say that I got into the holiday spirit by consuming only red Powerade and diet ginger ale in a green can. Also, I ate a few saltine crackers. This morning I ate a bagel, but I have actually not been truly hungry all day, and what's more, I have miraculously lost three pounds since Friday! If only I knew the secret of not being that hungry all the rest of the days of the year, but I'm only able to swing this during holiday stomach virus time. You may ask, "Was all the misery of the stomach virus worth losing a measly three pounds?" To which I would respond, "Yes, yes it was." I have been stuck around the same weight for a couple of weeks now, and the scourge of Santa arrived and got me back on track in just two days!

Perhaps even more astonishing than the miracle of my three-pound weight loss, was the miracle of cleanliness that occurred today. My mom and I went to Goldberg's this morning, and when we came back to my house I commented that the entire place looked like the inside of a WalMart at 6 PM on Christmas Eve. (Have you ever been to WalMart on Christmas Eve? Just don't do it, man!) My mom, true to her role as mom-therapist, let me complain about the disgusting state of my house for a few minutes, then suggested that we clean up my living room. We had already gotten down all of my Christmas decorations, meaning I climbed into the attic and handed all of the tubs down to Mom, you know, so that I wasn't killed in climbing up and down the ladder.

Then we straightened, dusted, rearranged, shoved some things into closets, threw some things away, and generally made the room look 957 times better than a WalMart looks, well, than a WalMart looks anytime. My mom even swept the entire room and got all the pet fur off my carpet. So, while today's miracle is certainly one of cleanliness, it is also one of awesomeness, meaning that I am lucky enough to have the best mom ever! My mom is so great that when I found an old card that my ex-husband had given me (One in which he actually wrote something nice!), she let me be a little sad for a minute and then told me "Let's get rid of it so you're not finding him every time you clean." She then said that it was just hard because it made me think of one of the times he'd been nice. I had to laugh then, at both the truth and the sadness in that statement, but mostly I had to be glad that I have a mom who gets it. Not every woman is lucky enough to have a mom she even wants to spend two consecutive hours with, much less one who she can talk to about men and who will help her clean her house. I am truly fortunate that my mom kicks ass! And that, my friends, is nothing short of a miracle.

Day 5- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or "School's Out Forever!")

I turned my paper in yesterday afternoon. That sucker was
long enough that it could bore you for weeks!
Okay, so, I am just going to tell you right up front what today's Christmas miracle is. Usually I put it somewhere near the end of the post after giving you a lengthy explanation, but today I'm just going to come right out and say it: I FINISHED MY MBA! This event is a miracle for a number of reasons, and is the culmination of nearly TWO YEARS of having nary a life. (Okay, to be honest, I don’t have a super-exciting life even when I am not in school, but I have always wanted to use the word nary on my blog).

When I first started my MBA, as I have explained before, my plan was to leave teaching for some kind of business job where I could make the big bucks. What kind of business job I was never really sure, as I had a vaguely defined notion of it, of which the clearest parts were that I would get to go out to lunch when I wanted to and get to go to the bathroom whenever I needed to. However, as I mentioned in this post, I decided at the beginning of this year that I am going to stay in education, become an ADHD coach, and use my degree to eventually run my own ADHD coaching business. I actually did all of the financial figures of what I might possibly make in an entry-level business job and what I make now, and the fact that I currently don’t have to pay for my insurance tipped the scales toward staying in education. Plus, as I said, I like it.

Anyway, getting back to the Christmas miracle—I actually finished my last class yesterday afternoon when I turned in my last paper. That sucker was 16 pages long and has prevented me from watching television, knitting, and exercising since last Saturday. When I turned it in I felt the way I feel when I wear really uncomfortable heels all day, and then I get home and I take them off, and I just bask in the glorious feeling of not wearing any shoes. It was fantastic! Last night I hardly did anything, and it hadn’t sunk in that I don’t have to do work all the time anymore. But, this morning, I woke up and I felt FREE! It is such a great feeling that I might just do something crazy, like having a drink at dinner tonight, or painting my toenails bright orange or something.

Today is the official last day of class, and I won’t formally have my degree for a little while, but just knowing that I don’t have to look at a textbook for the foreseeable future is enough to make me giddy. Today is the first day of the rest of my life, and school’s out FOREVER! (If you know me, you know that last statement is probably not true, but let’s just go with it for now…)

Day 4- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or “I’m Fabulous!”)

My curly hair. Even if you don't think it looks
good just pretend that you do.
As I tell you about the Christmas miracles of the past two days, I feel free as a bird! I will get to why in my next post. First, let me ask you a question: Do you believe in karma; that what goes around comes around? Well, I didn’t think I did until this week. On Tuesday morning I woke up and was running late. Normally in the mornings I wash, dry, and straighten my hair—a task that takes at least half an hour. On Tuesday I didn’t have time to do this, so I just woke up, put some “product” in my hair, and went to school. My hair is naturally wavy/curly, and the night before I had washed it and let it air dry, so I went to school with curly hair, which I hardly ever do. Further, my hair is now short because I just got it cut last week, so the curl is a lot more noticeable than it has ever been before. Well, what do you know? Everyone loved my hair!

And I am really not exaggerating when I say everyone. I got more compliments on my hair on Tuesday than I have ever gotten on anything in my life. I didn’t even get as many compliments as I got on Tuesday on the day I got married! Empowered by the fact that I might not ever have to fix my hair in the morning again, I simply didn’t wash my hair on Tuesday night, slept on it, put some more “product” in it on Wednesday morning, and went back to work. I got a whole bunch of compliments on Wednesday too! It was like some alien person had replaced me—an alien person with magnificent hair! Emboldened by my second day of compliments, I washed my hair on Wednesday night, let it air dry, got up Thursday morning, and repeated my hair routine, which is to say I barely did anything to it. I got a few more compliments at work, and last night, when I went to Jason’s Deli, I got a compliment there too!

My family has a Thursday night tradition of meeting at Jason’s Deli to eat dinner together. We have been following this tradition for at least the last two years (Clearly we are not very exciting). Because we go there every week, we know some of the people who work there, including this man who works behind the counter making sandwiches. He is older than I am, and has a big, gold front tooth. Also, my mom has gotten into conversations with him several times, and has found out that he has 12 children by several different women. Of course, this man has a thing for me, and has asked my brother a couple of times if I am dating anyone, a question to which the answer is always “yes,” even though I currently do not date. The man talks to me sometimes, and gives me extra food from time to time.

Well, last night I walked into Jason’s Deli and went to the drink machine to start getting everyone’s drinks, and the man ran out from behind the counter and over to me.

“What did you do different!?” he asked excitedly.

“Uh, I let my hair be curly,” I said. “I have naturally curly hair.”

“You look awesome!” exclaimed the man. “Your look is awesome!”

I thanked him, somewhat embarrassed by the attention, but also somewhat buoyed up by the fact that my hair was fabulous enough to warrant a man running out from behind a counter in the middle of making a sandwich. At that moment I decided that maybe things in life are fairer than I thought. Maybe what goes around does come around, and maybe we do get something in return if we try to treat others well, AND maybe if we have endured a lot of crap, we one day get something wonderful in return. It was truly miraculous as I realized that, although I was in a crappy marriage, have historically picked terrible men, and that I currently have 50 pounds to lose, I HAVE FABULOUS HAIR! Plus, I don’t have to do ANYTHING to it except wash it. I feel like I am finally getting my reward for enduring skeevy guys and gaining a buttload of weight, plus the torture of not being able to have chocolate whenever I want. Because, although things may have sucked for me sometimes (like they have for everybody) not having to fix my hair in the morning kind of makes up for some of that. And, during this season of giving, I feel like I have been given a lot. Happy Holidays!

Day 3- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or "Hap-tea Holidays!")

This tea might not look like a deadly assassin- but looks
can be deceiving!
So, I will try not to report only about Christmas miracles that are food related, but a lot of them do seem to be. Today’s Christmas miracle is not about food, exactly, but rather is about beverages. Today I felt good when I woke up, but I was pretty tired. For the first 45 minutes of the day I met with a very sweet fourth grade girl to work on math. Well, I was so tired during that time that I was having to do this thing where I hold my eyes wide open, like I am staring, because if I don’t do that then my eyes just close, and before you know it my head starts nodding, and then I fall asleep momentarily, and THEN my head jerks and, as you can imagine, it is all very awkward, plus, probably not something you want your child’s teacher doing. Well somehow I made it through our 45 minutes without the awkward head nod and jerk happening, but I knew that I would have to do something to wake myself up if I wanted to be conscious for the very long meeting I had to attend at 11:45.

I went down to the teacher’s lounge to get some tea. I was delighted that there did not appear to be any pies, cakes, cookies, scones, biscotti, candies, truffles, or pastries in the lounge. I don’t normally drink things with caffeine in them (I gave up caffeine a couple of years ago and I had—no lie—a headache for a month when I did! But that’s a story for another time…). Anyway, I decided to drink a little caffeinated tea today so that I didn’t fall asleep while I was supposed to be supervising children. I shudder to think of the things that could happen if I were sleeping in a room full of third, fourth, or fifth graders. I dug through the cabinet that holds the tea until I found a tin of holiday tea in the back of the cabinet. The fact that the tea was in the back should have given me a hint that it was probably not the newest tea in there, but, seduced by the fancy packaging, I threw caution to the wind.

I put my cup under the Keurig machine and brewed some hot water, then stuck one of the holiday tea bags into the cup. The tea bag was made of this light, mesh material and looked quite extravagant; much nicer than an ordinary teabag. It made me feel all sophisticated and stuff. At about that time another teacher came in and saw the holiday tea tin and mentioned to me that the tin might be old. I responded that, although the tea might be from last holiday season, it is not every day that your tea comes in sachets rather than teabags, and that I was going to take a chance on it. It was like that tin of tea was sitting there crooning some Abba to me.

I then sweetened the tea using Splenda and, you know what? It really wasn’t as delicious as the packaging had led me to believe it would be. Also, it tasted a little funny. I began to deduce that perhaps the holiday tea was at least a year old, if not two years old. As I drank the last of the tea, a silent scream escaped my lips. Surely I would soon perish from imbibing this past-its-prime percolation! I waited for what seemed like an hour and, what do you know? A Christmas miracle occurred! You better believe that I did not actually die from drinking two-year-old tea! Obviously there was no bad fortune brewing, and I would live on to see another day of the holiday season. It was tea-riffic!

Days 1 & 2- The 24 Days of Christmas Miracles Campaign (Or "Keep Away from the Pie!")

This pie was calling my name-loudly, like in a banshee voice.
Each day, from now until Christmas, I will be sharing one Christmas miracle that occurs in my life. I call it the “24 Days of Christmas Miracles” campaign. (It would sound much better if it were 25 days, but I actually started yesterday, when I wrote about a Christmas miracle on Facebook, and I think I’m stretching it by counting yesterday anyway). What constitutes a Christmas miracle? I think you know me well enough by now to understand that I will not be telling you extremely sappy stories of how people were good to each other, or stories of religion, or things that might qualify as human interest pieces on the news, although don’t totally rule any of that out. No, my Christmas miracles will be stories of things that happen to me or my loved ones that are in their own ways, somewhat amazing.

For example, yesterday’s Christmas miracle occurred in the evening. I had gotten home after working a twelve-hour day, and I was exhausted, plus I wore really uncomfortable shoes yesterday, so my feet hurt. I took off my shoes, changed into workout clothes, and promptly got in my bed to “relax a bit” before getting on the treadmill. This scenario usually means that I will fall asleep at 8 PM in my workout clothes, but last night—alas!—it was not a portent of this disappointing fate. No, I actually got up out of my bed at 8:52 PM, and walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes! It was truly a miracle of the season! Another, related miracle is that, while I was walking, I watched Scandal and now I am almost caught up so I can start watching it live again. Hoorah for the little things!

Today’s Christmas miracle is maybe just as miraculous, if not more so, than yesterday’s. You see, today, when I walked into the teacher’s lounge to refill my water bottle, what did I spy, but a delightful pecan pie sitting on the table? I love pecan pie, because it is super-sweet, and also it has pecans, which I used to eat all the time as a kid. I passed right on by that pecan pie, though, in the hour following my pie avoidance I must confess that I did lust after it in my heart several times. Then, as I was coming back inside from the fire drill, I started walking toward the lounge, engaged in a fierce inner battle over whether or not I would, indeed, act on my illicit feelings about the pie. I was just about to give in, when I remembered something I read in an article on the website I use to help me lose weight. It was about self-sabotage, and it stated that when people are attempting weight loss, they will sometimes set themselves back by making choices they know they don’t want to make. I thought, “Dammit! I really don’t want to eat this pie, and I’m not going to!” That’s right folks, instead of scarfing down a piece of pecan pie like it was a bottle of Evian I found in the desert, I got the apples out of my lunch and ate them instead! It was a truly miraculous event!

Now, you may think my Christmas miracles are trivial, or that my calling them miracles makes a mockery of perhaps the larger miracles of Christmas of which you may have heard. However, I respectfully disagree. Sometimes in the day-to-day struggles that are our lives, it is truly miraculous when we make a choice not to continue doing something that is bad for us or our loved ones, or when we decide to do something for ourselves that will make things just a little bit better. Sometimes such decisions require a large measure of courage and determination and, as we recover from major setbacks and our more common daily disappointments, to make a good choice, even one time, is something for which we should truly be thankful. And if that’s not the true meaning of Christmas, then what is?

There's a Sucker Born Every Minute!

This is me, you know, minus the bald head and
surly expression.
So, a few weeks ago I went to a conference for work. It was a conference about ADHD, and, as educational conferences go, it was in a really good location: Washington D.C. Now, my dad goes out of town on business fairly regularly, usually to attend conferences or trainings, and he has gotten to go to the Cayman Islands; Dublin, Ireland; Banff, Canada; and Las Vegas. In the world of education, no one is going to hold a conference in the Venetian Hotel and Casino. Instead, educational conferences end up being in places like Gatlinburg, Tennessee, so that, while you are learning more about teaching you can also get a t-shirt airbrushed with a picture of gun and your name on it.

For most of the conference I did not leave the hotel, which, I might add, was pretty nice as far as the types of hotels I am used to. While I would love to one day stay at the Ritz Carlton, or at some other super-ritzy hotel, I usually stay in the Holiday Inn or the Days Inn, so the Hyatt in Washington D.C. seemed super fancy. My dad went with me, and attended to some business while I went to the conference, and one evening, we both went to dinner with my cousin, Slade, his wife, Katie, and their daughter, Ellie. (That was the only time I left the hotel, other than to walk down the street to eat at a Chili’s). Slade and Katie are super nice, and Ellie is really adorable, so a good time was had by all. I really enjoyed myself on the trip, and getting away from my job for a few days proved to be regenerative.

On Saturday, during the last session before my dad and I were to leave the hotel to return to Atlanta, something really, uh, interesting happened. I must preface this story with a statement about how uncomfortable the chairs were in almost all of the conference sessions. I think that every 30 minutes sitting in one of those chairs probably equated to an hour that I will have to spend with a chiropractor sometime in my future. During the last session, though, I found a way to be more comfortable. There was a table with three chairs behind it in the back of the room. When I sit at a table, there is less pressure on my back to keep me upright, since I can just lean on the table. While we all know I would rather the conference take place in a room fashioned with a huge plush sofa with a waiter who serves all-you-can-eat desserts, the table was the best choice at the time.

I sat down behind said table, and was getting ready to pull out my knitting. I knitted during most of the conference sessions, because they were all lectures, and I like to multitask. I think many of the people in the audience just thought I had ADHD and that knitting was my strategy to stay focused, and I did not tell them otherwise. Just as my hands closed around the knitting needles in my bag, I notice a semi-cute guy who seemed to be approaching the table. He was no George Clooney, but he definitely stood out as a cut above some of the other conference attendees. He was about five feet from the table, when a tiny woman ran up and sat in the chair next to me. Seeing that the chair was now occupied, the guy made his way to the middle of the room and sat in a chair, sans table. The little woman was already one down. I glared at her.

“Hi,” she said. “Can you take notes for me during the session? I have a learning disability, and someone took notes for me during the last session, and it was great.”

I sat there, smiling, like a deer caught in headlights. The woman also had crossed eyes which, in combination with the statement about having a learning disability, made me feel bad for her. Now, I have never known anyone with any type of disability who just walked up to people and announced that they had a disability, so that was kind of weird, but, as a person whose sympathies can be played upon, I agreed to take the notes, nodding yes idiotically, like one of the animatronic creatures in the Monster Plantation at Six Flags Over Georgia. She thanked me and sat down next to me, then began writing in her notebook, which showed me she obviously didn’t have any physical problems with writing.

I never miss out on an opportunity to put a picture of
George Clooney on my blog. I'd take notes for him anytime!
Before I could process the fact that I had just agreed to be this woman’s personal scribe for the next hour and a half, a tall blonde, smiling woman approached the table and sat down in the third chair. The woman appeared to just smile at anyone and anything in her path, almost like someone whose face had been tightened up too much by plastic surgery (Bruce Jenner, anyone?) She and the tiny woman immediately struck up a conversation, even though they appeared not to have ever met before that moment at the table, and the conversation went something like this:

Smiley: You know, I just left during the break and got a Dr. Pepper.

Shorty: I love Dr. Pepper!

Smiley: I could have just gone up to the first floor to get it, but, instead, I went up to the eighteenth floor, because I really love looking down from high places, and I thought, why not go up to the eighteenth floor? It was really great!

Shorty: Really great!

They became such instant buddies that they continued their conversation. In fact, there conversation seemed to be so scintillating that they continued it all the way through the speaker’s lecture, as I sat there next to them, taking notes like an ignoramus. When the tiny woman wasn’t gabbing it up, she was reading a book she brought with her, or she was making to-do lists on the back of her conference handouts while I, like the unfortunate dimwit I proved to be, sat there, writing down for her all of the things she was missing by, you know, NOT LISTENING AT ALL.

When I told my family this story at dinner one night, my mom sat there, drawing an S on her chest, and mouthing the word “sucker” to me, complete with the dramatic facial expressions normally only seen in silent films. I know I should probably try to defend my idiocy in some way, but I can’t. I am, indeed, a sucker!

No, I'm Not Dead! Isn't That Fantastic?

This is what I have been doing for the past
month, only not so peacefully, and without
the snazzy arm pillow.
So, I know it has been, like 47 years since I have posted. I am very sorry about that. As I mentioned before, I started working the after school program at my school to make extra money, so every day but Thursday I go in to work around 6:30 AM, and I leave work around 6:00 PM. Needless to say, at the end of the day I have about as much energy as Ben Stein did in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I have been coming home, eating dinner with my parents, and then usually falling asleep for, you know, just a little nap (Read: all night). Oh, and doing schoolwork. What is this schoolwork of which you speak, you ask?

I don’t think I have ever mentioned this before, but I am in the process of completing an MBA. I am doing it online, and I promise it is through a reputable university, and not one where you give them $200 and they give you your diploma. When I started my MBA in January of 2012, I planned to change careers and become an accountant so that I could make the big bucks. (I do not make much money as a teacher.) However, as time passed, I realized that I was about as good at accounting as a two year old is at being quiet, and I decided I did not want to struggle through my job every day. So, I switched my major to project management. I figured that making the big bucks was still a possibility, and I enjoyed my classes.

But, when school started this year, something important happened. I started enjoying my job a lot. I hadn’t enjoyed much of anything since I got divorced, but it appeared that I was getting some of my spark back. I had an energy shift and I became much more optimistic. I remembered how much I liked working with my students, and particularly with my students who have ADHD.  Now, right after I got divorced my initial plan was to become an ADHD coach. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named had ADHD, and I learned so much about it while I was with him. Mostly I learned to have massive amounts of patience. While I did want to specialize in working with people with ADHD, the thought of doing anything remotely related to Old Nimrod made me ill, so I decided not to follow that path.

Well, now that I am almost done with my MBA, I have decided that I do want to become an ADHD coach after all. I stand to make a lot of additional money doing that, and I would be doing something I enjoy. My first thought was that the MBA was a waste, but, after having Mom and Dad therapy on the topic, I think the MBA will actually be very useful in helping me run my ADHD coaching business. At first I will probably have to just offer my services after school hours, but, once I become more established, I would eventually like to transition into doing the coaching full time. If you are asking “What the hell is an ADHD coach?” then you are not alone. When I first heard of ADHD coaches, I thought it was probably something that would be administered by some quack with no credentials, but, after doing my research, I found out that there is an accrediting body and everything. ADHD coaches help children and adults with ADHD learn to manage their symptoms, and to become more productive and efficient. Basically, I will be helping people make the changes they need to in order to improve their lives. Since I love helping people, this appears to be the perfect job for me. I am going to begin my classes in March of 2014, and will finish by May of 2015. Then I will be able to begin seeing clients over the summer. The classes are actually teleclasses that are scheduled twice a week in the evenings for an hour and a half.

Anyway, getting back to my original point in writing this post, I am so busy right now that I just stopped writing blog posts completely. I will finish my MBA on December 6, and the class I am now taking is my very last class! We are in the third week of class right now, and I am just trying to slog through it. When I finish I am going to do something special to celebrate, because, as many of you may know, taking classes while working full time is about as much fun as getting a case of hand, foot, and mouth disease. Up until this semester I have always taken two classes at a time, so taking only one is almost like a vacation to the Bahamas. Still, since I have added the after school program, it is difficult to fit everything in.

I have been trying to exercise too, but I have been about as successful at that as your average fish is at climbing a tree. Theoretically, I could exercise either in the morning before work, or later in the day after I get home from work. I have tried numerous times to get up at 4:45 AM, but I have determined this is just not ever going to happen. One time, about a month ago, I woke up at 4 AM and exercised, and I felt great in the morning, but by 1 PM I felt like I was in the middle of a Hunter S. Thompson book. I ended up having to go to sleep right after I got home from the after school program that night because I was basically incoherent by that time. So, that leaves when I get home from work as my exercise time.

I don't have any human children, but if I did, they would not
be sleeping at 10 PM because the sound of the treadmill
would keep them awake! (maybe)
I have tried exercising right after I get home, but I am too hungry. I cannot exercise right after I eat, because then I am too full and will probably throw up on my new treadmill. If I do not do it immediately after eating, though, I will lie down on the couch at my parents’ house, or go back to my house and lie down on the bed, and then it is so much harder to get up! Plus, when I exercise right after dinner, I don’t get to hang out with my parents and their pets, and I like to do that. So, that leaves me with exercising later at night, around 10 PM. I am not saying it’s never going to happen, but I am not saying it’s definitely going to happen either. We shall see.

I have missed you all during my hiatus. I have actually discovered that writing these blog posts greatly improves my mood and overall disposition. It is uncanny how much actually. It is almost like taking a little pill that just makes everything better. I have worried about trying to be funny every day, but maybe it is okay if every post is not hilarious. Maybe I will just write and try to be interesting. Once again, we shall see. For now I will be happy with having written this one post, and I will just keep on trucking.
